Lutterworth Athletic produced a sensational late comeback to earn a 2–2 draw away at league leaders Sutton United in the Midland Football League Division One at Coleshill Road Stadium.

Facing a Sutton side sitting top of the table and boasting one of the league’s strongest home records, Atho showed resilience, belief and quality to fight back from two goals down and take a valuable point in dramatic fashion.

Played in freezing conditions, the hosts made a fast start and struck early through in-form striker Oli Jeeves, who converted from close range inside the opening five minutes.

Sutton continued to press and doubled their advantage shortly before half-time, once again through Jeeves, who kept his composure to finish after a perfectly weighted pass into the box. At the interval, Lutterworth trailed 2–0 but remained firmly in the contest.

The second half saw chances become more limited, with Sutton looking to control proceedings, but the visitors grew into the game and began to apply pressure as the match wore on.

The turning point arrived deep into added time when Sutton goalkeeper Lewis was forced from his area, leading to a corner for Atho.

From the resulting delivery, captain Alex Vineall rose highest to power a header into the net, giving Lutterworth a lifeline and sparking belief of an unlikely comeback.

Moments later, that belief was rewarded.

With Sutton retreating under sustained pressure, substitute Bradley Coleman showed superb composure inside the box, chesting the ball down before volleying an excellent finish past the goalkeeper to level the scores and stun the home crowd.

The final whistle soon followed, confirming a remarkable point for Lutterworth Athletic against the league’s pacesetters.

It was a result built on determination, resilience and character, with the visitors refusing to accept defeat and battling right until the final kick.

Credit must go to Sutton United for their quality and control for large spells, but the Atho will rightly view this as an outstanding result and a sign of their growing confidence and togetherness.

Atho will look to build on this momentum as they continue their league campaign, taking plenty of positives from a performance as they face Wednesfield in back-to-back games, starting with a visit to The Cottage Ground on Saturday 10th January.
