LUTTERWORTH ATHLETIC FC HISTORY

THE FOUNDING YEARS

Lutterworth Athletic Football Club traces its origins back to 1983, when it was originally founded as Lutterworth Juniors and Youth Football Club.

The club was established with a simple yet vital mission: to provide children from Lutterworth and surrounding villages with the opportunity to play local league football.

The focus was on not only developing footballing skills but also nurturing physical, emotional, and social development, all while ensuring that the young players had fun.

Over the following decade, the club grew steadily, offering local youngsters a structured and supportive environment to learn the game.

By 1993, the first group of players had reached adulthood, prompting the formation of a senior team.

It was at this milestone that Mick English, Terry Waterfield, and Steve Rendell laid the foundation for what would become Lutterworth Athletic Football Club.

THE BIRTH OF LUTTERWORTH ATHLETIC

With the establishment of the senior team, Lutterworth Athletic joined Division Two of the Leicester & District Football League.

Success came quickly, as the club secured the Division Two title in the 1994-95 season.

That same year, they were runners-up in the prestigious Leicestershire & Rutland County FA Trophy, signalling their intent as a rising force in local football.

CLIMBING THE LOCAL LEAGUES

Following their promotion to Division One, Lutterworth Athletic continued their impressive rise.

In the 1996-97 season, a fourth-place finish was enough to see them promoted to the Premier Division.

However, their initial stint in the top tier proved challenging, and they were relegated after just one season.

Undeterred, the club bounced back.

The 2000-01 season saw them finish as Division One runners-up, earning another promotion to the Premier Division.

Building on this momentum, Lutterworth Athletic went on to win the Premier Division title in 2004-05, securing promotion to Division One of the Leicestershire Senior League.

FROM DUNLEY WAY TO HALL PARK

In 2005, the club moved to a new ground at Dunley Way.

However, restrictions on the use of floodlights at the site posed challenges for the club’s ambitions.

A significant development came in 2011 when Lutterworth Athletic relocated to the floodlit Hall Park ground, which had previously been home to Lutterworth Town.

This move allowed the club to meet the ground grading requirements for higher level competitions.

Lutterworth Town subsequently took over the Dunley Way site.

ENTERING SENIOR COUNTY FOOTBALL

The club’s transition to the Leicestershire Senior League marked a new chapter.

After several competitive seasons, they finished as runners-up in Division One in 2008-09, earning promotion to the Premier Division.

During their time in the Leicestershire Senior League, Lutterworth Athletic also made their debut in the national FA Vase competition, reaching the First Round Proper in the 2011-12 season.

The 2011-12 season proved particularly significant, as the club finished as Premier Division runners-up, achieving promotion to the East Midlands Counties Football League for the first time.

This move elevated them to level 10 of the English football league system, a remarkable achievement for a club with such humble beginnings.

FURTHER LEAGUE TRANSITIONS

After just one season in the East Midlands Counties Football League, Lutterworth Athletic were transferred to Division One of the United Counties League at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Over the following years, league reorganisations saw the club move again to Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League in 2021, only to return to the United Counties League a year later.

Most recently, following further league restructuring, Lutterworth Athletic now compete in Division One of the Midland Football League as of the 2024-25 season, a division they will remain in for the 2025/26 campaign.
