LUTTERWORTH ATHLETIC 2-3 GORNAL ATHLETIC
Saturday 21st February 2026
Lutterworth Athletic were narrowly defeated 3–2 by league leaders Gornal Athletic in an entertaining and hard-fought contest at Ausden Clark Arena.
The visitors made a bright start and opened the scoring after just 10 minutes.
A flowing move saw Townsend release Taylor Homer down the right, who squared the ball across goal for Traevey Wright to finish from close range and give Gornal the early advantage.
Atho responded well to going behind and gradually worked their way back into the game.
Their persistence paid off in the 38th minute when debutant D’Lanie James broke through the defensive line and calmly slotted home to bring Lutterworth level.
It was a deserved equaliser after a strong end to the first half, and the sides went into the break all square at 1–1.
The second half began at a frantic pace and just four minutes after the restart, Gornal regained the lead when a powerful run through the middle ended with a shot that was parried into the path of Taylor Homer, who reacted quickest to fire into the bottom corner.
Lutterworth again showed resilience and character and in the 53rd minute, James McGrath marked his first goal for the club in style, finishing well to level the match at 2–2 and set up a tense final half hour.
The decisive moment arrived shortly after the hour mark with a penalty award to the visitors.
Taylor Homer stepped up and converted from the spot in the 63rd minute to restore Gornal’s advantage.
Atho pushed hard in the closing stages, throwing players forward in search of an equaliser.
A late free-kick looked destined for the top corner, only for an outstanding save from the Gornal goalkeeper to deny Lutterworth what would have been a dramatic leveller.
Despite the defeat, it was a spirited and competitive performance against one of the division’s strongest sides who have only lost one league match all season.
Next up for Lutterworth is an away trip to Chelmsley Town on February 28th, as they look to bounce back and return to winning ways.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
