Match Report:

An excellent team performance from every single Atho player, against a very strong, quick, well organised Rugby Team.

Mid afternoon showers gave way to a beautifully sunny evening as the game kicked off. The pitch looked in great condition, and a large crowd of supporters had gathered to watch Athletic's toughest pre-season test thus far. From first to last whistle, the game was played at a ferocious pace. Both teams showing equally impressive football moving forward, with equally as strong back lines closing ranks to keep the game tight.

In the first half Lutterworth had a couple of half chances to score, with the hard working Taz and JP strike partnership working hard to close the ball down and keep Rugby playing football in their own half. Ten minutes before the half, Lutterworth gifted Rugby with a tap in to take the lead going into the break. Lutterworth dug deep and started to make their physical presence known in the game, with some big tackles flying in from both teams. This resulted in yellow cards for both JP and Tebbatt, after the ref decided that too many of their challenges had been made with excessive force. HT 0-1.

The second half started as quickly as the first had ended, with Atho making 4 subs to try to break down the well organised Rugby back line. As the game progressed, all the pre-season fitness training paid off, with the Atho being able to match and compete with Rugby in all areas of the park. A few finger tip saves from Josh kept Lutterworth in the game, but the Atho failed to beat the Rugby keeper in 90 minutes. The first time in 4 games that we have failed to find the net, and the first loss we've had all pre-season.

Considering Rugby are several steps higher than Lutterworth, our lads gave a very impressive account of themselves, frustrating the Rugby side and playing some excellent football. This was by far the toughest opponent we have faced so far, and every single player on the pitch should be proud of their performances. Special shout out to the Atho back line, lead by Black and Dom, who all performed exceptionally well!

Played 4, Won 3, Scored 11 and conceded 2. If we can carry this sort of form into our League performances this season, it promises to be a very exciting ride! Come on the Atho!
